Review - Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Keeping with the spooky reads this week; I feel that something very peculiar this way comes…

Of course I’m talking about Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs!

I’ll admit, this is a book that I picked up because of the hype that existed around it.  I’d heard so many good things regarding this first novel in Ransom Riggs’ incredibly well written new series and it seemed that every time I went to a bookstore, it was sitting there on the shelf staring at me.  Apparently I couldn’t take it anymore and so I broke down and bought it.

I am not unhappy with my purchase.

This book truly has it all; including the creepiest old photographs you may ever see.  Even just the initial beginning of this story is wrought with foreboding and just a twinge of fear.  From the very beginning you are told this story of children who are…different.  Of course our main character is being told these stories by his grandfather and, being the subject matter of said stories, has a right to be a little objective to the truth behind them.

It isn’t until a family tragedy occurs that our protagonist, sixteen-year-old Jacob, finally realizes that there might be some truth to these old stories.  After a brief bout of, what his family thinks, is complete insanity, Jacob and his father decide to go to this mystical island that seemed to house the main setting for his grandfather’s outlandish tales.

Welcome to Cairnholm, a remote island off the coast of Wales.

Once setting foot upon the island, Jacob soon comes to realize that this island is not all that it seems.  In fact, a spooky decrepit old house, a hidden trunk full of old pictures (much the same quality his grandfather used to show him), a basement full of disgusting jars of body parts and a chase through dangerous marsh lands; leads Jacob to a world that he never thought could exist.  A world where children aren’t who they seem to be and magic seems to be as real as breathing.  What happens next?  You’ll have to pick up the book to find out!

Honestly I thoroughly enjoyed this book.  In certain parts, the reading was a bit slow, but otherwise I found myself immersed in a historical world filled with magic, mystery, and even murder.  At some points I will admit to a bit of a scare, especially very near the beginning of Jacob’s fantastic journey, but this gave me all the more reason to fall in love with the world in which Ransom Riggs has created for his characters!  Truly, I cannot wait to read the next book, Hollow City!  I ended up giving Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children a 4.25 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.

On a side note, Quirk Books, the publisher for these incredible novels, created a rather excellent Book Trailer that I think will really grab anyone's attention towards these books.  You can see the trailer here:

And I've also heard talks of a movie...I definitely want to be first in line to watch that!

That’s all for this review!  If you’ve read this book or any of the Peculiar Children series, please feel free to leave a comment below and let me know what you thought!

Thanks guys and, as always, “Spread the joy of reading!  Lives can change with the turn of a page!”

Scare you later! J
