Review - My Life Next Door by Huntley Fitzpatrick

Okay, since Spring is in the air, I thought a little light and fluffy read might be in order.  Well I got the fluffy but this book was by no means light.  Sure it had its moments, but there were also quite a few intense moments in there as well.  The premise may be a bit worn but, I will never regret picking up…

From the very first page, this book tends to lean towards the typical neighbors, boy next door type plot line.  You also have the very typical subject of a girl whose mom is rather stuck up and doesn’t really care for how the family next door lives and forbids her daughter from getting wrapped up into THAT world.  Meanwhile the family she is talking about are actually great people who love and take care of one another.

Now, our main character Samantha, has been living under her mom’s rule for quite some time.  She abides by most all of her rules and even has a perfect summer job that will fit in with her mom’s image.  Oh, by the way, her mom…a local politician…there’s no wonder that Sam has to be completely perfect.  But, Sam has a secret.  She’s taken to sitting on a flat edge of her roof and watching her neighbors’ day to day lives.  She finds their love for one another and the crazy antics that happen between them, highly entertaining and she wishes for the kind of happy chaos they seem to have.

Be careful what you wish for.  Suddenly, Jase, the oldest brother of the family, finds himself climbing Sam’s trellis and sitting outside with her, getting to know her.  It doesn’t take long and a bond forms between them.  Sam finds out just how quickly she can fall for Jase as she gets to not only meet his family but also interact with them and feel all that happy chaos for herself.  Things seem to be going well as she keeps her relationship with Jase a secret…her mom will never know…until the unthinkable happens.

Now she’s keeping a secret from Jase…a big one.  One that, if he knew, would crush him and put a void between them so great that it would be unlikely they’d ever get close to one another again.  Can she do the right thing and pray he’ll forgive her, or will she keep things quiet and risk everything?

Like I said, I was expecting a fluffy light story with this book.  It was a novel that I picked up on a whim and thought, “why not”?  I was actually pleasantly surprised by this book.  It was one in which I read cover to cover in just about one sitting.  The story flows really well and immediately you get attached to Sam, Jase and Jase’s crazy lovable family.  Just as you are getting well-adjusted with how the plot is going, it takes a sharp turn and you are left with a jaw dropping scenario that I NEVER saw coming.

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and gave it a 5 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.  This was the first novel I’ve read by Huntley Fitzpatrick and I cannot wait to pick up the rest of her novels which seem to be centered around the same town.  If you haven’t already read this…please go pick it up.  You won’t be disappointed.  If you have read this, let me know what your thoughts were in the comments below!

Happy Reading! J
