Review - Passenger by Alexandra Bracken

Okay so to start off with our main character, Etta Spencer, is this fantastic violin prodigy.  She studied from a very young age and now we find that she is getting ready to play for a rather large crowd at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She gets ready, comes onto the stage, begins playing and…hears the most awful sound she could possibly hear.  It’s so awful in fact that she is forced from the stage and ends up running into the murder scene of someone she loves dearly.  She isn’t able to think on it too long however.  In fact, she doesn’t even know what’s going on when she suddenly wakes up aboard a ship she has no knowledge of ever boarding.  Thus begins her journey…

1776.  That’s the year Etta finds herself waking up in.  She’s aboard a ship, in the middle of the Atlantic, trying to figure out exactly what year it is and where she is…with no escape in sight.  She happens upon Nicholas Carter…the captain of the ship Etta has so ungracefully found herself on ,and finds that she’s not very likely to receive the answers she so desperately needs.  We also find out that Nicholas…the ruggedly handsome pirate…has his own agenda and a smart mouth (as is the way of pirates).  But someone else seems to be pulling the strings and it seems Nicholas’ job is to bring Etta to someone much more sinister, for reasons yet unknown.

If you haven’t figured it out by now…Etta is a time-traveler.  It’s in her blood and once she makes this discovery, she also finds out that it’s a generational thing and there are multiple families out there who can time travel.  There are also multiple “passages” that can lead you through to different times, all over the world.  One family in particular seems to be ruling these said passages and we find out the head of this family, is of a particular rude, violent sort who wants to make sure that his family will be the only family that can make these journeys through time.

Oh…and this same violent guy?  He’s holding Etta’s mother hostage in return for her going on a journey to find a sacred relic he needs, to control said passages.  So…no pressure right?

All in all I found this book entertaining with the history, in its regard, very well done.  I enjoyed Etta and Nicholas’ banter back and forth and I found that the conflict held my attention throughout the entire story.  I felt that we, as the readers, were taken on a scavenger hunt of sorts, which was very nice.  Now I can tell you that, I believe there will be another book to the series, solely based on how the book ended.  It did end with a huge cliffhanger and…I will be picking up the next installment should it be made.

All in all I gave this book a 4 out of 5 stars on GoodReads because there were certain parts that I did feel were slower than others.  Otherwise this was a wonderful journey and I hope that you can pick this up soon.  If you have read this book, let me know what your thoughts were in the comments below.

Happy Reading!
