Review - You by Caroline Kepnes

“You’re going to be so sorry when you realize what you made me do…the good news is that I have no regrets.”

Okay, the first thing I can tell you was that this book was sooo creepy and powerful in a way that it really makes you think about the things you put ANYWHERE on social media.

Our beginning to the story is when Guinevere Beck, Beck to her friends, goes to buy a few books.  She enters a bookstore, selects her purchases, and chats it up a little with the friendly cashier before leaving and going about her day.  Something we all can agree we’ve done more times than not as book lovers.  What she doesn’t realize, is that she’s just started a string of events and “chance” meetings, that will make her wish she’d never stepped foot into that bookstore.

You see our friendly cashier?  His name is Joe and he has decided that Beck is the perfect woman for him in every sense of the word.  He’s out to get her…and he’ll kill to do it.  Joe is very observant and he immediately catches Beck’s name from the credit card slip she had to sign to pay for her books.  He then decides to surf the internet and see if he can find more about her…and wouldn’t you know…there she is all over Twitter.

Soon Joe starts to perceive a pattern of sorts about Beck’s life.  He finds out where she hangs out, who her friends are, and ultimately where she lives.  In a bizarre turn of events, he also gains access to her apartment and her phone…and is able to see everything that she posts, texts, and even her emails.  It isn’t long before he’s made himself into the perfect guy for her.  The one she can run to in times of trouble and the one she tells all her secrets to.  It doesn’t matter that he had to be a little secretive and sly about finding out about her.  It doesn’t matter that he’s gotten rid of a few people either…the point is that they are together and he intends to keep it that way.

This book gave me chills.  From beginning to end I was hooked and couldn’t put the book down.  It read like a movie and at times I know how horrified I must have looked reading it!  The scary thing is, we open ourselves up to things like this, without even really knowing it.  The internet is such a scary place if you don’t know what you’re doing or if you aren’t selective about what you put out there.  I guess the real moral of this story is just that…to be careful in all that you do when it comes to social media.

All in all I gave this book a 4.25 out of 5 stars on GoodReads and I highly suggest you pick this one up.  A sequel has just been released titled, “Hidden Bodies”.  If you haven’t read You, go out and pick up both books!
