Angry, vengeful ghosts?
Unidentifiable monsters? Creepy scavenger
hunts with body parts?!
No this isn’t the makings of a horror movie…it’s just today’s
review of two creepily haunting and terrifying graphic novels!
May I present to you:
Graphic novels, huh?
Wow…now there’s something I never thought I’d read. Before I begin, I don’t have anything against
graphic novels, I’d just never really found one that interested me. That was until I began blogging. Suddenly a brand new world opened up to
me.
I read reviews on graphic novels
that actually had a premise that held my interest. I watched videos that gave suggestions on
where to start first if you were new to the graphic novel world. I found myself curious and decided to pick up
two novels that I thought looked pretty eerie and creepy for my October reads!
I have to say I was thoroughly impressed!
So let’s just start off with the first graphic novel I
read:
Anya’s Ghost,
follows high schooler Anya Borzakovskaya, through her essentially boring
everyday life. She’s not the least liked
kid at school, but she’s by no means popular either. She has one friend, who’s not really the most
trustworthy, and she gets rather average grades at school. Plus, she has a huge crush on the most
popular guy in school and is barely a blip in his radar.
All of this changes however when she accidentally falls into
a well out in the middle of the woods.
When she comes to, she sees skeletal remains of someone who’d been down
there way longer than she had. Oh not to
mention the ghost that’s floating above her waiting for her to wake up. I don’t have to tell you how Ring-esque this
all sounds right?
Needless to say, after freaking out a bit, she’s finally
found and rescued and continues on as normal trying to put her experience
behind her. It’s not until later that
she discovers that somehow one of those skeletal bones found its way into her
school bag somehow and then…guess who’s coming to visit?
Full details aren’t going to be necessary with this
particular graphic novel. All I want to
tell you is that you definitely must go out and pick this up. It’s a fantastic and spooky read that can
probably be finished in one sitting. And
the twists near the end? I can’t say I wasn’t
surprised but, I was still very much creeped out! Let’s just say things aren’t always as they
appear!
All in all, I gave this graphic novel a 5 out of 5 stars on
GoodReads. I absolutely loved it!
Now on to the second graphic novel I read.
Through the Woods
by Emily Carroll. Holy cow! Can I just stop right here and say how
awesome the pictures were in this book?!
The artistry is crazy good and the stories are told so simply that you’ll
have nightmares for weeks.
Essentially this graphic novel/illustrated book, involves an
Introduction story and then offers up five short stories to give you the
creeps. There’s also a conclusion that
ties everything together rather nicely and finishes off your nightmarish
journey through the book.
Now if you are a fan of books such as Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, you will have no problem reading
and enjoying this book. The five short
stories read just as those particular stories did back in the day except they
err more for adults than children. Of
course I thought the Scary Stories
books could have been written for adults anyways. Anyone remember the short story of “Harold”.
Yeah…no.
Regardless, within this book you will find a creepy tale of
children disappearing, dismembered corpses coming to life, possession, fake séances,
and even creepy blood sucking monsters. If
you thoroughly enjoy a good scare, and fantastic drawings, I would suggest you
go out and pick this book up immediately.
I ended up giving this book a 5 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.
That’s it for this review guys! I really hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts
on both these novels and if you’ve read them, please feel free to leave me a
comment below on what you thought! Also,
if you can suggest any graphic novels for me to try next, please do! I’m kind of excited to try out more in the
graphic novel genre!
Thanks guys and as always “Spread the joy of reading! Lives can change with the turn of a page!”
Keep it scary! J
