Review - Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

Admittedly, after finishing Eleanor and Park, I knew that pretty much anything Rainbow Rowell wrote would be AMAZING.

I just didn’t realize that her characters would leave me in such a tailspin that I’d have to reread the book TWICE before I could finally put it down and go on with the next book on my TBR list.  I’m sure you all know which book I’m talking about.  That’s right….today’s review is on…

Really?  How did I not know about this book before now?

You have the drama and excitement of going to college, moving into a dorm, and experiencing everything that comes with college life.  Or at least Wren (the sister to our main character) gets to experience all that.  Cath (our main character) is a little bit different than her twin sister.  In fact, for all the parallels between the two, there are beginnings to a lot more opposites between their lives.

Wren likes to party.  Cath likes to stay in and read and work on her Simon Snow fanfiction.

If you are a fan of fanfiction, as I am, I will tell you that this is definitely a book to check out.  Not only do you get to read some of Cath’s fanfiction, you also get to read small portions of the book her obsession comes from.  And when I say obsession, it’s definitely no small thing.  Cath’s whole life revolves around Simon Snow who seems a LOT like Harry Potter…

Well…until Levi that is.

Levi is her roommate’s “boyfriend” and works at the local Starbucks.  Suddenly it seems like all he’s doing is hanging out with Cath and spending more and more time with her.  Cath is so stuck in her own world and unknowing of the goings on around her, that she never even sees the looks Levi gives her or the little touches and nice gestures that could possibly lead to something more.

With a major deadline looming over her head, a father whom she constantly worries about, a sister who seems to be pulling more and more away from her, and Levi (who she’s slowing beginning to find herself quite fond of), what’s a girl to do?

All in all, I LOVED this book.  With the little inserts here and there of both her fanfiction and the Simon Snow novels, this book feels like a book within a book.  I quickly found myself eager to get lost within both stories and found them highly entertaining and heartwarming.  Again, I do think Simon Snow holds a serious Harry Potter-esque vibe, but that can be overlooked for the overall plot of the actual book itself.  All in all, I gave this book a 5 out of 5 stars on GoodReads!

Also, Rainbow Rowell’s new novel, Carry On comes out in stores on Tuesday October 6, 2015 and from what I can tell, will be the actual fanfiction highlighted in Fangirl!

If you’ve read Fangirl, let me know what you thought in the comments below!  If you know of more Rainbow Rowell books I should read,  please let me know!  I definitely want to try anything available by this author!

Thanks guys for reading my review and, as always, “Spread the joy of reading!  Lives can change with the turn of a page!”

See ya! J
