Review - The 13th Sign by Kristin O'Donnell Tubb

It’s been a bit since I’ve written out a review and I’d like to apologize in advance for that.  Don’t worry though, reviews are at the ready AND as a special spooky treat, you’ll be getting spooktacular reviews all this week!  So with that, I humbly present the first in this line of spooky fall reads as:

Now guys I have to admit, this isn’t the scariest of the books I’ve read for October.  In fact, in a 1 out of 5 Scare Scale…I’d probably rate it a 1.  Nonetheless, the story is still told in a way to really grab the reader’s full attention.

Our story begins in New Orleans which immediately alerts you that it might be a little spooky and a lot magical.  It’s our main protagonist, Jalen’s, thirteenth birthday and, as is tradition, she is brought into a voodoo shop to have her fortune told.  Now, not really being a big believer of any of this stuff, she mainly goes to appease her Nina (her grandmother).

However this year is different.  Of course she doesn’t believe the lady reading her fortune but, after perusing the shop a bit, she finds a rather interesting book that seems to be padlocked.  Finding interest in that, she decides to buy it but is quickly told it is not for sale.  Of course, her best friend thinks the book is the best idea for a birthday present and immediately puts money on the table and they take off with the book.

You can see where this is going right?  It’s definitely not good.

So after trying to open the book multiple times, the lock finally clicks open and the book opens up.  Now, I won’t give you many details on the adventure that comes from this but, I will tell you that if you ever find such a book that’s padlocked…DON’T try to open it.  Most of the time, it’s only bad news.

Essentially, the whole story revolves around the zodiac and what happens when a thirteenth sign appears.  Now while I did enjoy the read, it definitely wasn’t my favorite.  I found myself losing interest at times and I wasn’t really into some of the character development.  All in all I gave this book a 3.5 out of 5 stars on GoodReads.

If you’ve had a chance to pick up The 13th Sign, please let me know what you thought in the comments below.  If you haven’t read it yet and you find the premise interesting, please go and pick it up and tell me what you think.

Thanks guys for taking time out to read my review and, as always, “Spread the joy of reading!  Lives can chance with the turn of a page!

Have a Spoooky week! J
