Review - Reawakened by Colleen Houck

Rotting mummies, sand pits, and New York…did we step into an alternate reality?  Nope not quite!  Actually, we’ve just stepped into Colleen Houck’s latest YA novel, Reawakened.  In the first of this incredible new series, Colleen takes us on a magical adventure to Egypt complete with ancient curses, reawakened mummies, and a heroine whom I’m sure MANY can relate to.  Plus there are hot Egyptian princes and who doesn’t love that?!

Lilliana Young has always abided by her parents rule.  She’s associated with the people they wanted her to associate with, she’s gotten excellent grades, and her college decisions are right around the corner.  The daughter to a “successful international finance lawyer” and a media company guru, she’s really got it all in most people’s opinion.  For the most part, Lilliana has accepted her fate that her life will forever be dictated in such a way to follow in her parents footsteps.

Until

…she heads into the closed off Egyptian exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  I won’t give you any huge details, but I can tell you she gets WAY more out of that particular exhibit than she was bargaining for!

It isn’t but a short time later and she is headed off to Egypt with Amon, a newly resurrected Egyptian prince who needs her help in ways that “Young Lily” can’t even comprehend.

The story shoots off, as most do, on a magical quest to save all humanity from a fate far worse than we  could even imagine with a curse as old as time itself.

I will say, Colleen Houck really surprised me with this novel.  I had a lot of nervous feelings when I cracked this book open to its first page.  I was scared there would be a LOT of similarities to her first series, Tiger’s Curse.  In a lot of ways, I was not wrong.  I loved Tiger’s Curse and I thought it was a beautiful series with vivid details and depictions of India.  I loved the romance, the love triangle…heck I loved everything about it!

Reawakened has much the same formula in that regard.  The romance is phenomenal and…I’ll be honest…had me tearing up…at work.  (My coworkers thought I was crazy!)  Besides that point, the Egyptian landscape is described in ways that make me absolutely want to jump on a plane and go straight to Egypt to view it for myself!

But...in all the ways that Reawakened is like Tiger’s Curse...it is also its own separate entity.  The differences between the books are like night and day, or the moon and the sun.  (Read the book...you'll totally get it!) There’s a lot of history and quite a bit of mystery surrounding the main characters that had me flipping page after page in hopes to really figure out what was going on.  And the ending…WOW…really that’s ALL I can say about that.  Read it, you’ll see!

Honestly if you haven’t went out and grabbed your copy of Reawakened, you are REALLY missing out.  I went out and bought this novel as soon as it hit the shelves and finished it within two days.  In fact, I’ll probably be reading it OVER AND OVER until the next book comes out.  I wish I could speed up time…
