Okay so after practically YEARS of people begging me to read
this book, I finally did it. I grabbed
up a copy, settled down in my favorite spot to read, and opened up to the first
page with a grimace on my face.
Now don’t ask me WHY I was completely against reading this
book series. Was it because it was so
popular? Was it because it was a type of
Distopian world? Was it because I just
didn’t think it was going to be that great?
I don’t have answers to any of these questions because,
really…I believed them all to be true. I
had it in my head that I didn’t want to read something like this because…it
just didn’t look like my kind of thing.
I didn’t care about Distopian worlds and people fighting and trying to
take over the world (I didn’t even know what the story was really about). All I knew was that I didn’t want to read
it. Period. End of story.
So you can understand why I had such a look on my face as I
finally pulled out a copy of the book that I had borrowed and went to
read. Suddenly, I found myself one
hundred pages in and I didn’t even realize it.
I am not ashamed to admit, I was WRONG.
I was immersed in a world of Factions and The Choosing Ceremonies and in
particular the lives of the teenagers who were going through such an insane act
of choosing “Faction over Blood”.
This book…I can’t even really describe in words how
incredible it is. Here you have Beatrice
Prior, a 16 year old girl who has to go through what every sixteen year old is
going through, the Choosing Ceremony. During
this ceremony, all sixteen year olds are forced to stand before their families,
each of different factions, and choose to stay or go into a different
faction. Now mind you, if they choose to
go to another faction, they are not allowed to go back to their family. Oh sure there are times when their families
can visit them but, choosing a faction other than your own could be seen as
betrayal and the chances of their families visiting them are slim to none.
Of course Beatrice picks a faction that is not her own and
so far away from what her old faction was, that it’s almost mind blowing. She must go through trials and an initiation
that, if she survives, she still has a slim to none chance of gaining the
faction she’s chosen as her own. If she
doesn’t pass initiation, she will be forced to live as a “Factionless” and
doomed to live on her own with no family, friends, or home for comfort.
I won’t go into details as far as what happens to Beatrice,
now Tris, but I will tell you this. She
is a lot more than anyone ever gave her credit for and she will try her hardest
even if it kills her. Is she
scared? Maybe, but as it is said in the
book, her fear only can make her stronger.
Plus…there’s this guy, Four, and boy is he something. I think I have a new literary crush in the
making!!
Honestly guys, if you haven’t picked up Divergent, take it
from me…you are missing out big time! I
went into this thing thinking it was going to be terrible and not my cup of tea
but…oh wow. Veronica Roth really proved
me wrong. I cannot wait to dig my hands
into the next two books of this trilogy and find out more about Tris’ story.
You can pick up a copy of Divergent on:
Thanks guys again for taking time out to read my review and
as always “Spread the joy of reading!
Lives can change with the turn of a page!”
See ya! J
